The Well-Architected Framework looks like an architecture topic and, at foundational level, is not one. The CLF-C02 does not ask you to apply design principles. It asks whether you know what the framework is, can name its pillars, and know which pillar a described concern belongs to. That is a small, learnable target.

What the framework is

The AWS Well-Architected Framework is a collection of best practices for designing and operating workloads on AWS, organised into pillars. It is guidance, not a service and not a certificate — you use it to evaluate your own workloads against a consistent standard. If a question describes it as something that automatically lowers your bill or runs your containers, that is a distractor: the framework advises, it does not operate.

The six pillars — one question each

The reliable way to keep the pillars straight is to pair each with the question it answers about a workload:

  • Operational Excellence — can we run this and keep improving how we run it?
  • Security — is the data and the system protected?
  • Reliability — does it recover from failure and scale to meet demand?
  • Performance Efficiency — are we using computing resources well as demand changes?
  • Cost Optimization — are we avoiding waste and choosing cost-effective options?
  • Sustainability — are we minimising the environmental impact?

Almost every pillar question is a scenario that matches one of those six questions. “Recover from an outage” is Reliability. “Avoid paying for what we don’t need” is Cost Optimization. “Reduce environmental impact” is Sustainability. Read for the signal and pick the pillar.

The tool that goes with it

There is one service to know by name: the AWS Well-Architected Tool, which walks you through reviewing a workload against the pillars and suggests improvements. Its common distractors are other real tools that do adjacent things — CloudWatch monitors, Cost Explorer reports on spend, Trusted Advisor gives account-wide checks — but only the Well-Architected Tool is built specifically for a framework review.

How to use the questions below

Answer each one before revealing the explanation, then read past the correct letter to why the other three fail. The distractors here are either invented pillar names that sound real, or the wrong pillar for a described concern. Matching a scenario to the right pillar on sight is the whole skill this topic tests, and the reasoning below is written to build it.
